Florida’s agriculture export is being positioned for tremendous growth. An article in The Florida Current, shared about Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam’s recent returned from a four-day visit to Panama. His goal with the visit is ultimately to increase exports of Florida blueberries and strawberries. In the last decade, crops that have doubled in production, and in some cases tripled, include blueberries, strawberries and watermelon.
There has been a recent trade agreement between the U.S. and Panama, and that has boosted trade between the two countries. However, Commissioner Putnam is hoping to widen the canal, which would allow for larger freight ships. This translates to much more product leaving Florida for Panama.
Florida farmers can take advantage of the growth in imports this project will bring, by shipping their products on outbound freighters. Florida imports many products from around the world. Commissioner Putnam wants to ensure we, as a state, and the agriculture industry in particular, fill those empty ships with our valuable products.
Florida has been in the blueberry business for many years, but only since the last decade have growers begun to make a name for themselves. Blueberries are one of a few products positioning Florida agriculture for a promising future.
